Doris “Dorie” Miller. - Doris “Dorie” Miller, 1. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Miller was below decks working on the laundry when the first torpedo struck. Out of ammunition Miller made his way down to the boat deck, helping pull sailors from the burning water, saving lives.
